I am extremely grateful for the Honors Mentorship program and my time at Complete Family Eyecare. It has been a wonderful experience that I will never forget. It was exactly what I needed to finish my high school career and look at a possible future one. From this experience, I was able to gain better communication skills, more knowledge about the professional workplace, and additionally I made friends. By completing HMP, it gives me a competitive edge compared to other people who are looking for or competing for the same programs/jobs. It was really just an opportunity to learn about that career path and decide if it would be a good fit for me.
To get the most out of my mentorship, I put myself out there. I was willing to help or do anything they needed from me. When I would finish my own responsibilities, I would then take the initiative to help other workers or take the time to learn more about the equipment and machines. I think that was something that made me stand out from some of the other employees there. I also asked a lot of of questions! That was the only way to stay active and show that I was interested.
At the beginning of my internship, I was for sure that optometry was for me, but as my time there came to a close, I have come to realize that optometry isn't for me. I still wish so do something medical and have the same level of interactions with others; it just won’t be in an optometry practice. My advice for future HMP students would be to have an open mind and be willing to try anything someone puts in front of you. You’re making a reputation for yourself and the school, so represent yourself well and maturely. Lastly, share your experience with others because everyone should be a part of it and know what an amazing program this is.
